Standard range of sand moisture content

Water Content in Soil

Water or moisture content in soil. Water content can be tested according ASTM D 2216-92 by determining the mass of the wet soil specimen and then drying the soil in an oven 1 2 - 16 hours at a temperature of 110oC. Values can vary from essentially 0% (near surface rubble, gravel or clean sand) up to 1200% (organic soil like fibrous peat).

Moisture Content Determination

Typically, moisture content is determined via a thermogravimetric approach, i.e., by loss on drying, in which the sample is heated and the weight loss due to evaporation of moisture is recorded. There are many stages of the production process where moisture determination benefits the overall quality of the finished product: raw materials, goods ...

1.8 Sample Processing— Three procedures (moist, air dry, and oven dry) are provided to process the sample to obtain a specimen. The procedure selected will depend on the type of sample, the maximum particle-size in the sample, the range of particle sizes, the initial conditions of the material, the plasticity of the material, the efficiency, and the need for other testing on the sample.

Water content (w) is the percentage of the weight of water to the weight of the dry solids. The term "moisture content" is sometimes used instead of "water content." A saturated soil has its voids completely filled with water, and its water content is denoted by w,,. Soil below the water table is usually considered to be saturated.

moisture content is a measure of the proportion of void (pore) volume occupied by water or some other liquid in a sample of porous material at a specific time. Volumetric moisture content is a function of the gravimetric moisture content (SOP 40) and either the bulk density (SOP 32 and SOP 65) or the porosity (SOP 42) of the material.
